I’m very happy to announce that the winner of our book poll is Sonia Meyer’s thrilling WWII saga, Dosha, the Flight of the Russian Gypsies. I’ll be reviewing it shortly, followed by an author interview with Ms. Meyer that will offer extra insights into her book, her special background and her writing life.
This soaring epic saga takes place against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of WWII. We are taken into the lives of Russian Gypsies of the horse-trading Lovara clan. We witness their daily struggles, both as partisans fighting the Nazis during the war and as survivors in the war’s terrible aftermath. In the face of persecution under Khrushchev’s new Russia, the Gypsies feel compelled to withdraw once again into the special hidden world of their own culture. We are given rare glimpses into their unique rituals, practices, and spiritual beliefs, as they fight to survive the criminal attacks of Russia’s KGB, who attempt to incarcerate them in death camps.
We are taken into this secret world through the eyes of one young Romany woman, Dosha, a talented rider of horses, who must hide her Gypsy identity in order to survive. As luck or fate would have it, Dosha and her talented horse are drafted into the prestigious dressage team in Leningrad. Through this fortuitous event, Dosha enters into a love forbidden to Gypsy women. But she also discovers the means to lead her tribe and her horse to freedom in the West.
